About Me

“I hope that my happiness with what I do is reflected in my furniture…that it is vibrant, alive and friendly to the people who use it.”

Sam Maloof, Woodworker

Now let me introduce myself:

Paul Hughes Chase, born and raised in San Diego, part of sunny California and near the Mexican border. For more than 10 years, however, the beautiful Saarland has become my adopted home.

Two incredibly amazing girls get to call me "Dad"! This title to me also bears the importance to be a role model and to live by my values: honesty, consistency, sustainability.

I spend my free time outdoors, whether in the forest, in our natural garden, as a beekeepers or, if possible, on vacation surfing!

The natural product wood had a central part in my entire life: From the first pocket knife to the first skateboard, to the woodshop in high school -  woodworking runs through my childhood.

After high school, my passion led me to Palomar College into their Woodworking School. Here my former teacher introduced me to the works and working methods of  Sam Maloof  closer and I was immediately hooked! What an artist!

As the
winner of the Carl Duisberg grant, I came to Germany in 2001/2002, got a taste of carpentry and met my current wife.

Back in San Diego, I started my own business  (Chase Custom Woodworks) in 2006 and producing custom built solid wood furniture.

In 2020 and 2021 I used the turbulent Covid times to get my woodworking master degree in Germany (Tischlermeister) and am now proud owner of Chase Naturholz.

In a nutshell:

Carpenter since 1998 incl. 4 years self-employment as a furniture maker in San Diego, German master carpenter since 2021, owner of Chase Naturholz since 2022
